AZTEC DEFENSE CORRALS BRONCOS IN 17-7 VICTORY
San Diego State takes over the sole lead of first place in the Mountain West Conference. Aztecs defense holds Boise State to 7 points in a defensive gem. Rain thwarts the Broncos offense as the Aztec defense controls game. On a wet night in San Diego, the Aztecs came to play with their patented swarming defense taking center stage in a 17-7 defensive gem. The Broncos were held to 7 points for the fourth time this season as the elements contributed to a run heavy game. Aztec quarterback Jayden Denegal passed for only 17 yards while completing six passes on ten attempts. Meanwhile the rushing game was on full display as the Aztecs ripped off 277 yards on the ground with Lucky Sutton leading the way with 150 yards on 25 carries and Christian Washington adding 98 more on nine carries. Boise State quarterback Max Cutforth, making his first start, fared a bit better going 12/18 for 104 yards. Their rushing game was more effective with both Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines carrying the workload with 79 and 78 yards respectively. Maybe the stat that was most indicative of the game were the number of punts. Boise State punted seven times while the Aztecs accounted for six. Boise managed 14 first downs while the Aztecs only were able to account for 12. With the victory, San Diego State (8-2, 5-1) is in the drivers seat for the regular season conference title. Boise State (6-4, 4-2) falls into a tie for second place with Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico and UNLV with two games remaining to be played in the regular season. A crowd of 29, 201 weathered the elements to see the Aztecs win one of their most important games of the season. Despite the rain, spirits were high and confidence building for an Aztec team that many had written off in pre-season polls. In the past, the playoff road ran through Boise. This season it shifts to San Diego. The big unknown is which team will be in second place when all is settled. Each of the teams have two games left with various cross-over implications. The Aztecs own the tie breaker over Fresno State and Boise State with New Mexico still to play. Hawaii has the edge over the Aztecs. With each of these teams not playing the full allotment of conference teams, there will be some questions that will not be answered until the final week of play. Boise State had enjoyed beating the Aztecs three straight times as well as playing in the conference championship game seven of the last eight seasons. There is much more parity this season as the six bowl eligible teams are all in contention to play in the conference championship game on December 2. The Aztecs now have the inside track to hosting the game. The Aztecs rebounded from their previous week embarrassing loss to Hawaii, clicking on defense and doing just enough on offense to gain the win. The Aztecs started the scoring early in the second quarter with a six-play, 80-yard drive, capped off by a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Jayden Denegal. Christian Washington contributed 79 yards on the drive. He and Lucky Sutton would provide an effective one-two punch in the backfield. Boise State would not sit idly by as they responded with their own drive, a 14-play, 75-yard drive. That was capped off by a 9-yard touchdown run by Dylan Riley with a little more than five minutes left until halftime. The Aztecs responded this time with Lucky Sutton getting the call, rushing for 50 yards on an 11-play, 71-yard drive, again culminating in a Denegal 8-yard rush for a 14-7 Aztec lead going into halftime. The second half would only see a 47-yard field goal by Gabriel Plascencia with nearly 11 minutes left in the game. The Broncos would be held scoreless in the second half as they would miss a 41-yard field goal with 1: 20 remaining and the Aztecs would run out the rest of the clock. The Aztecs were happy to have cornerback Chris Joinson return to the lineup after missing the game against Hawaii with a leg injury. Chris Chambliss and Mister Willliams both led the Aztecs with eight tackles. There were no interceptions or fumbles in a relatively clean game. Aztec wide receiver Jordan Napier was injured with 4: 14 remaining in the first half and would not return. The Aztecs time and time again would stop the Boise State vaunted running game, holding them to a total of 164 yards on 41 carries while delivering their own brand of AztecFast football with 277 yards on 46 carries. NEXT UP FOR THE AZTECS ARE A FLOUNDERING SAN JOSE STATE SPARTAN TEAM ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 22 AT 7: 30 PM. The Spartans and their previously vaunted passing game will visit Snapdragon next Saturday. The Spartans were shellacked by the Nevada Wolfpack 55-10. This victory was a highlight for the Wolfpack as they dominated every facet of the game. San Jose, meanwhile, had it’s vaunted passing attack terminally grounded with five turnovers and a complete inability to either run, pass or play defense. They resembled the Aztecs in their humbling defeat in Hawaii. If history is any precedent, we might see the Spartans rebound off that loss next week. Or we might just be seeing a really good Aztec team take charge early and often on their way to securing a conference championship. AROUND THE MOUNTAIN WEST Excitement abounded Saturday night around the conference. It started early with Air Force dropping their game against UConn in East Hartford Connecticut, 26-16, which happened to be the same score they defeated SJSU the week before. Next up on the slate was New Mexico holding on to beat a slumping Colorado State team, 20-17. The Lobos are bowl eligible and own the tie breaker against UNLV. They play at San Diego State on Friday November 28, in what looks like an exciting matchup. The next game was Nevada’s epic explosion over San Jose State. Nevada scored more points than in their previous four games combined, effectively relegating the Spartans to figuring out what the heck happened. National passing leaders Walker Eget and Danny Scudero were both pulled in the second half, left to ponder their precarious predicament. In probably the most exciting game of the weekend, Utah State took UNLV to double overtime before dropping 29-26. They had a chance to win in the first overtime but their field goal attempt was wide left. Utah State needs one more win to be bowl eligible, while UNLV continues to pad their season of remarkable play. The Rebels have lost to both Boise State and New Mexico with Hawaii still to play. There’s a strong chance that they will not make the championship game due to these losses, but expect them to emerge in the bowl season. Finally, the evening game last night was Fresno State handling Wyoming 24-3 in Fresno. The Bulldogs have Utah State and San Jose State left on their schedule and own the head to head over both Hawaii and Boise State, and own a 23-0 loss to the Aztecs. San Diego State has positioned themselves very well heading into the final two weeks of the season. They have managed to overcome lowered expectations and return to the day of power defense. The Hawaii loss is looking like an anomaly while the wins over Boise and Fresno are looking commonplace. The momentum is building towards the end of the season with a great chance it will carry forward into next season’s new conference.
