Mark Wahlberg on Why His Batman & Robin Role Never Happened
Mark Wahlberg Recently Recalled Almost Becoming Dick Grayson in *Batman & Robin*
Mark Wahlberg recently opened up about nearly landing the role of Dick Grayson, also known as Robin, in the 1997 film *Batman & Robin*. The movie famously starred George Clooney as Batman and Chris O’Donnell as Robin. Despite its star-studded cast, Joel Schumacher’s *Batman & Robin* was met with disappointing reviews from both critics and fans.
In a recent interview, Wahlberg, known for his role in *Play Dirty*, revealed how close he came to being cast as Robin. Speaking with ET Online, he shared, “I was in talks. I did not get the official offer, but I was meeting with Joel Schumacher about *Batman & Robin* for Robin. I was a fan of Joel’s and his other works, but I wasn’t really interested in that type of project.”
Additionally, in March 2024, the BAFTA award winner discussed being considered for the role of Robin in the 1995 movie *Batman Forever* during a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast. Wahlberg explained, “No, we met, we met quite a few times. We talked about it. I never got the official offer.” He also expressed relief, stating that he was glad he never officially received the offer.
Wahlberg is one of the few actors who has largely stayed away from the comic book genre. When asked by ET Online if he would ever consider joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe if Robert Downey Jr. invited him, Wahlberg responded candidly: “I don’t know if I have the confidence to walk out of my trailer in one of those costumes. I have seen many that I love, *Iron Man* being my favorite. I think that was really the epitome of quality superhero films.”
He went on to say, “But I just never really had the opportunity, so I never had to make any decision on whether I would or not. But I hadn’t really pursued anything in that genre either.”
Though Wahlberg almost became the iconic Robin, it seems the role—and the superhero genre in general—was never quite the right fit for him. Nonetheless, his insights provide a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the *Batman* franchise and his own career choices.
