Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Pushes for India’s First Pod Taxi Project Between Bandra and Kurla
Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the implementation of the proposed pod taxi project between Bandra and Kurla as a model initiative — the first of its kind in India. He has also instructed officials to expedite the work to ensure timely completion.
A detailed presentation on the project was made to the Deputy Chief Minister at his residence on Thursday. The meeting saw the presence of several senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary Asim Gupta, Principal Secretary Navin Sona, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, Additional Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal, Inspector General of Police Anil Kumbhare, among others.
Calling pod taxis the “next step in public transport services,” Shinde highlighted the significance of the project, especially for the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) area, which is experiencing rapid growth and mounting traffic congestion.
“This service will provide citizens with relief from traffic jams and serve as an effective alternative to private vehicles,” he said, emphasizing the potential positive impact on daily commuters.
The planned 8-kilometer corridor from Bandra to Kurla will feature 33 stations, making it highly accessible to a large number of commuters. Once operational, the project is expected to significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease road traffic in this bustling business district.
“This is the only such project in the country, and it must be implemented as a model for others to follow,” Shinde added, stressing the importance of accelerating the execution pace.
