13 Democrats crowd primary race for retiring Congressman Danny Davis’ seat
CHICAGO (WLS) — No fewer than 13 Democrats are vying for the nomination to fill the seat held for 30 years by retiring Congressman Danny Davis. Among the candidates is state Rep. LaShawn Ford, who has received Davis’ endorsement.
However, on Tuesday morning at his West Side polling place, Ford experienced some voting issues. He reported that although he checked in without problems, when he entered his card into the electronic voting machine, it indicated he had already voted. It took nearly an hour to resolve what appeared to be a computer error. The Board of Elections confirmed that its legal team became involved. Ultimately, Ford cast his vote using a paper ballot after declining a provisional ballot.
“I was fortunate to be able to move things around and stay there to protect my vote,” Ford said. “Imagine anyone else who had to get to the office, go to work, or attend to other duties—they couldn’t have stayed an hour.”
The crowded Democratic field also features Chicago Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, who is endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union. Community organizer Kina Collins is making her fourth run for the nomination.
Real estate developer Jason Friedman has raised $2.5 million, the most money in the race and more than three times his closest competitor’s total. Other candidates include Anthony Driver, Richard Boykin, and Dr. Thomas Fisher.
The 7th Congressional District covers parts of downtown Chicago, portions of the South and West sides, and some of the western suburbs.
On the Republican side, Chad Koppie and Patricia Easley are competing for the nomination.
