Trump Warns Iran: ‘One Way or The Other, We Will Soon Get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE’
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump stated that nations “affected” by the attempted closure of the Strait of Hormuz will send ships alongside the U.S. Navy to keep the passage “open and safe.” He emphasized that despite Iran’s military forces being significantly degraded, Tehran still has the capability to harass maritime traffic using drones, mines, or short-range missiles.
Trump specifically listed China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the U.K. among the countries he wants involved in the naval effort, adding that there are “others” also impacted by the situation. The primary goal, he explained, is to remove the risk of disruption caused by what he called an “artificial constraint” on shipping through this critical waterway.
### What Trump’s Strategy Means for Oil Markets
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. Consequently, any threat to shipping there has immediate repercussions for global energy markets.
In his comments, Trump also linked U.S. actions around Kharg Island to Iran’s potential interference with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He revealed that U.S. Central Command has targeted military facilities on Kharg Island while intentionally leaving the oil infrastructure intact—for now.
Trump warned that this restraint could change if Iran or any other actor attempts to obstruct maritime movement through the strait. “Should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision,” he wrote on Truth Social.
### Iran’s Military Weakening Amid U.S. Pressure – Can Global Allies Secure the Strait?
Trump outlined a coalition-based maritime plan focused on escorting and protecting commercial vessels while anticipating low-cost attacks such as mines or drone strikes. He stated that U.S. forces would continue striking targets along Iran’s coastline and would actively target Iranian boats and ships involved in harassment.
In a Fox News Radio interview with Brian Kilmeade that aired on Friday, Trump reiterated that the U.S. would escort ships through the strait if necessary and promised to “hit Iran very hard over the next week.”
Beyond military measures, Trump urged Iran’s military and regime affiliates to lay down their arms. He also claimed in a subsequent post that Iran’s aggressive plans against the region and Israel are now “dead.”
### The High Stakes of Kharg Island’s Control
Kharg Island, situated about 16 miles off Iran’s coast, handles nearly 90% of Iran’s oil exports, making it central to any attempt to pressure Tehran by squeezing its oil revenue.
Located roughly 300 miles from the Strait of Hormuz, the security of Kharg Island is tightly linked to the broader fight over maintaining free and safe passage through the strait.
Trump highlighted that the U.S. possesses the world’s most advanced weapons but has deliberately chosen not to destroy Kharg Island’s oil facilities—while keeping that option open should shipping be threatened.
As reported on Truth Social, Trump concluded by saying that the U.S. and partner navies will “soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE.”
