Jayson Tatum won’t make return from Achilles tear in Celtics’ matchup vs. 76ers
76ers star Joel Embiid will miss Sunday’s game against the Boston Celtics due to an oblique strain. According to the 76ers’ injury report, Embiid is expected to be sidelined for the team’s next three games.
Meanwhile, Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will not make his season debut on Sunday either. Tatum remains out as he continues to recover from a right Achilles’ tendon injury sustained last May in a game against the New York Knicks. There had been speculation that Sunday’s matchup could have been a possible return date for Tatum.
NBC had moved the Celtics’ game against the 76ers from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and started airing segments of a mini-documentary highlighting Tatum’s recovery process. Tatum has expressed a desire to make his return in front of a home crowd, but Sunday will not be that day. While he has publicly stated uncertainty about whether he will return this season, there have been encouraging signs he may be approaching a comeback.
Last week, ESPN reported that Tatum was cleared for 5-on-5 practice. Prior to that, he had been working out with the Maine Celtics and even completed an hour-long workout in front of reporters last month.
The Boston Celtics have been playing well in his absence, winning eight of their last ten games, including a recent victory against the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden.
On the Celtics’ injury front, Baylor Scheierman is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game due to a left thumb fracture.
This Sunday’s matchup will be the fourth and final regular-season meeting between the Celtics and the 76ers. So far this season, the Celtics hold a 1-2 record against Philadelphia, with each game decided by two points or less. They lost the season opener at TD Garden, secured a road win on Halloween, and fell again to Philadelphia on November 11.
Currently, the Celtics sit second in the Eastern Conference standings, while the 76ers hold the sixth spot. Sunday’s game will be an important contest as both teams aim to solidify their positions heading further into the season.
