Meta pauses teen access to AI characters
Meta is Temporarily Halting Teens’ Access to AI Characters
Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Instagram and WhatsApp, announced in a blog post on Friday that it will temporarily restrict teens’ access to its artificial intelligence (AI) characters. Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to interact with these AI characters until an updated experience is ready.
This restriction applies not only to users who have provided Meta with a birthday that classifies them as minors but also to individuals who claim to be adults but are suspected to be teens based on Meta’s age prediction technology.
Despite this change, teens will still be able to access Meta’s AI assistant; however, they will not be able to use the AI characters during this period.
The timing of Meta’s decision is notable, as it comes just one week before the company, along with TikTok and YouTube, is scheduled to face trial in Los Angeles. The trial addresses concerns related to the potential harms these platforms’ apps may cause to children.
