
County Tournament: Robinson’s big second quarter helps propel Vinemont to 66-34 win over Hanceville, moves on to semifinals
Vinemont Lady Eagles Dominate Hanceville Lady Bulldogs to Advance to Semifinals
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The No. 2 Vinemont Lady Eagles faced off against the No. 7 Hanceville Lady Bulldogs in the first varsity girls’ matchup of the tournament on Monday night. Hanceville held a slim lead after one quarter, but a huge second quarter by Vinemont gave them the lead at the half. The Lady Eagles went on cruise control after that, rolling past the Lady Bulldogs 66-34 to move on to the semifinals.
Vinemont wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first, as Reagan Robinson hit a driving layup less than 10 seconds into the game. Robinson then collected a steal and found Arleigh Thomason down low for the score, giving the Lady Eagles an early 4-0 lead. Mattie Keith answered with a three-pointer on the other end, making it a 4-3 game. After a pair of free throws by Caroline Miller made it 6-3, Keith drained another three from the left wing to tie the game at six.
Later in the quarter, Piper Butts knocked down a three, and Kerrigon Moore added a basket in the paint to give the Lady Bulldogs an 11-8 lead. A layup by Robinson and a free throw by Vayda Yarbrough tied things up at 11. Moore then split her free throws, and Alex Twitty added two free throws of her own to put Hanceville ahead 14-11 going into the second period.
Robinson and Miller each hit baskets down low early in the second quarter to give Vinemont a 15-14 lead. Both teams traded leads over the next few possessions. After a Moore basket gave Hanceville a 19-18 lead, Robinson and company took control, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 18-1 the rest of the half.
Robinson scored 12 of Vinemont’s final 18 points before halftime, while Yarbrough’s steal and layup at the buzzer gave the Lady Eagles a commanding 36-20 lead heading into the locker room.
The Lady Bulldogs quickly started chipping away at Vinemont’s lead in the third quarter. Butts knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing, and Moore’s three-point play cut the deficit to 36-26 early in the frame. But Yarbrough answered with five straight points to push Vinemont’s lead to 41-26.
Four free throws by Twitty trimmed the lead to 44-30 late in the third quarter, but Thomason’s three-pointer before the buzzer extended the Lady Eagles’ advantage to 47-30 heading into the final quarter.
Vinemont extended their lead quickly in the fourth quarter. Thomason converted a three-point play that stretched the lead to 50-30. Miller then buried a three-pointer, and Robinson scored six straight points to give the Lady Eagles a commanding 59-30 lead.
Jadyn Knott and Haley Millwood scored the final seven points of the game, sealing a convincing 66-34 victory for Vinemont as they advance to the semifinals.
