Neighbors voice their thoughts on the 100-day road closure for County Line Road project
**Douglas County to Close Portion of County Line Road for 100-Day Safety and Improvement Project**
Starting Tuesday, Douglas County, Colorado, will begin a 100-day closure of County Line Road from Clarkson Street to the U-Haul business access. This closure is necessary as crews work to fill a problematic dip at Lee Gulch and enhance overall public safety in the area.
Denver7 spoke with local residents about the project and what it means for the community.
Kathy Wren, who has lived in the neighborhood for 32 years, described the area as a “great place to raise a family.” She noted that while traffic on County Line Road during the day is manageable, rush hour can be chaotic.
“They are putting in two lanes in each direction on County Line, plus they’re going to install a traffic light right here at Clarkson, and we really do need it,” Wren said. “If you ever drive here during rush hour, it’s a nightmare, so that will really help a lot.”
Brad Vander Ley, a resident for more than 25 years, recalled the road’s notorious dips.
“Oh yeah, it used to be like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride,” Vander Ley said. “People would come out here intentionally just to go up and down the dips—that was crazy. If you were going too fast, it felt like you’d almost get airborne.”
The County Line Road project is a major effort involving collaboration between Douglas County, the City of Littleton, the City of Centennial, and the Denver Regional Council of Governments. Together, they are working to widen and reconstruct the road from University Boulevard to Broadway.
Another long-time local, Rob Sweet, emphasized that the improvements have been overdue.
“County Line Road has been basically in a state of disrepair for many, many years,” Sweet said. “It should have been converted from a two-lane road many years ago, just like the rest of it was.”
Douglas County officials noted that while crews will not be working continuously throughout the day, the road closure must remain in effect due to significant earthwork and unsafe travel conditions. A detour map is available to guide drivers on alternate routes.
While some neighbors acknowledge that this may lead to increased traffic on nearby streets during the closure, they agree that the long-term benefits will outweigh the temporary inconvenience.
“I think it needs to happen. I mean, people just have to deal with it. It is what it is,” Vander Ley said. “A hundred days—I was kind of shocked to hear that—but it takes a long time. What can you do? In the long run, the good is going to outweigh the bad for sure.”
