DeWine ignores thousands of concerned voters in signing bill to make voting harder: Letter to the Editor
On December 19, Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 293 into law, once again siding with anti-voter extremists in the Statehouse. This latest legislation is part of a troubling trend aimed at restricting voting access.
Senate Bill 293 eliminates the four-day window after Election Day during which legally mailed ballots could be accepted. Additionally, the bill enacts numerous unfunded provisions — including citizenship verification and data checks — that are likely to increase the number of provisional ballots and place additional burdens on election officials.
During a press conference, Governor DeWine stated that while he personally believes the four-day grace period is reasonable, he signed the bill out of concern that the U.S. Supreme Court may strike down a Mississippi law with a similar grace period for mail-in voting. This approach, described by critics as “obeying in advance,” represents giving up on what is right out of fear that powerful forces might push back.
Governor DeWine’s decision came despite thousands of calls opposing the bill, numerous testimonies against it, and many articles published in local newspapers expressing concern.
By supporting Senate Bill 293, Governor DeWine and the General Assembly have intentionally erected new barriers for eligible voters in Ohio.
Concerned Ohioans must take action to educate voters about these changes and protect their access to the ballot. It is also essential to vigilantly monitor the Statehouse and work to thwart any additional attempts that aim to make voting more difficult.
