Broward boys golfer of the year: Sohan Patel, American Heritage junior
American Heritage junior Sohan Patel captured an individual 2A state championship for the second consecutive season and was recognized as the Sun Sentinel Broward boys golfer of the year. Patel, a Vanderbilt University commit, rallied to win the state championship by one stroke after trailing by three strokes with five holes left.
He sparked his comeback with birdies on holes 14 and 15, followed by another birdie on 17, and finished with a par on 18 to clinch the title. Patel shot 5 under par for the tournament, carding scores of 70 and 69.
“I played a solid front nine in the final round,” Patel said. “I trusted my game and all the work I had been doing. I was ready for the big-time pressure moments. It was awesome to win it again. I am super thankful to my teammates and coaches.”
Patel also won the individual regional championship with a 67 and placed third in the district tournament, shooting a 70. His other notable performances include:
– First place at The Morrison Invitational (63)
– Tied for second at the Cognizant High School Invitational (71-68)
– Tied for third at the Qdoba Tournament of Champions (68-70)
In addition to his high school achievements, Patel has continued to enjoy success in AJGA events. Last November, he placed fifth at the Rolex Tournament of Champions (72-68-70-73), and in October, he finished tied for ninth at The Ping Invitational (72-73-70). In July, he reached the quarterfinals for the first time in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, finishing fifth overall with rounds of 70-70.
Earlier this year, Patel tied for second place in the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship with scores of 71-74-72. He also won a Minor League Golf Tour event at Indian Springs Country Club in Boynton Beach last June, birdieing the fourth playoff hole after finishing tied at 10 under in regulation.
“I was feeling great all season and playing some really good golf,” Patel said. “I played in a bunch of events and my game has been trending in the right direction.”
Patel credits swing coach Dan McCarthy for his development on the course, as well as the American Heritage coaching staff, including Brandt Moser and Bobby Jackson, for helping him improve his short game. He also praises amateur golfer Marc France for serving as a mentor, providing valuable insight into course strategy and how to handle different playing situations.
Patel committed to Vanderbilt University in August.
“Vanderbilt has amazing coaches and they develop players to get to the next level,” Patel said. “It’s great for academics and they have great facilities.”
With his continued hard work and dedication, Sohan Patel is poised for a promising collegiate golf career ahead.
