Pinewood Springs residents go without water after temporary line freezes
Pinewood Springs resident Doug Mann’s faucet sputtered to life late Tuesday afternoon, two days after he and other residents in the small mountain community north of Lyons lost water.
A temporary water line, set up amid ongoing construction of a new line, had frozen, affecting 19 homes in the area. Mann, who lives on Button Rock Road, had been without running water since Sunday.
During the outage, Mann bought bottled water and a membership at a recreation center in Estes Park so he could take showers. Neighbors have been offering to help via a community Facebook group, Mann said.
“Everyone is just trying their best to get by hoping this will resolve,” he said Tuesday afternoon before his water came back on.
The Pinewood Springs Water District acknowledged the situation in a Facebook post Monday morning, stating, “Obviously the water situation is intolerable for the folks over on Button Rock, Cheyenne and Buck Haven.”
### Water Line Construction and Delays
Construction on a new water line began in July, according to a Pinewood Springs Water District Facebook post. On November 9, the district said the project was awaiting parts and expected completion by November 26. However, a November 28 notice on the district’s website pushed the completion date to December 14.
Throughout the summer and fall, a temporary above-ground water line provided water to residents in the area. When temperatures dipped to about 10 degrees on Sunday morning, the temporary line froze, cutting off water supply, Mann explained.
### Efforts to Restore Service
Mann hopes that crews will focus on making the temporary line “winter-proof” before resuming work on the new line. “I would rather they concentrate on getting us water that stays on,” he said, expressing skepticism that the new line would be completed “anytime soon.”
On Tuesday, Colorado Civil Infrastructure—the contractor working on the new water line—brought in two ground thawing units to heat up the frozen water line. According to a post on the Pinewood Springs Water District Facebook page, crews were also working on “additional insulation.” The district expected water service to be restored by the end of the day.
Mann’s water returned around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday evening, although it remained unclear if water had been restored to all affected homes.
“We’ll have to see what tomorrow looks like,” he said.
### Billing and Communication
The Pinewood Springs Water District has assured residents that affected homes will not be charged for water use for the month of November, according to another Facebook post.
When contacted for comment, a representative from the district directed questions to board members, who could not be reached Tuesday evening.
