The Sonora Wildcats secured a commanding 56-18 victory over the Ripon Christian Knights on Saturday afternoon, successfully repeating as Sac Joaquin Section 6 champions.
Sonora received the opening kickoff and immediately took control on offense. Running back Cash Byington powered through with a series of big runs, setting the stage for Tommy Sutton to cap off the drive with a 29-yard touchdown run.
After Ripon Christian’s initial series ended in a turnover on downs, Sutton struck again with an almost identical 30-yard touchdown run, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 14-0.
The Knights rallied on their next possession, converting two critical 4th downs en route to a touchdown. However, Jeremy Snyder blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the score at 14-6.
Momentum briefly swung Ripon Christian’s way when Sonora fumbled the ensuing kickoff. The Knights recovered the ball on the 30-yard line and capitalized a few plays later with a touchdown. Their two-point conversion attempt failed, tightening the score to 14-12.
The Wildcats then asserted dominance, as their next three drives all culminated in touchdowns—one scored by Byington and two by Brody Speer.
On defense, Sonora effectively stifled Ripon Christian’s next two possessions. The challenge intensified for the Knights when their starting quarterback exited the game with an apparent concussion halfway through the second quarter.
Ripon Christian sparked excitement late in the first half by returning a kickoff for a touchdown, bringing the score to 35-18 at halftime.
The second half began with the Knights receiving the kickoff and returning it past midfield, presenting an excellent scoring opportunity. However, facing a relentless Wildcat defense, Ripon Christian failed to capitalize.
Following a turnover on downs, Sonora sealed the game with a lengthy drive culminating in another Byington touchdown. The Wildcats added two more late touchdowns from Byington and Eli Ingalls before the final whistle.
Tommy Sutton earned Chicken Ranch Casino Player of the Game honors with his two touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing. Lemar Vaughn was recognized with the Foust Heating and Air Hot Hit of the Game for an impressive tackle on first-quarter kickoff coverage.
With the win, Sonora improves to an undefeated 13-0 on the season and advances to the California state playoffs.
