CNBC Daily Open: A rough and historically atypical November for U.S. stocks
**U.S. Markets Closed for Thanksgiving, Eye Losses for November**
The U.S. stock market remained closed on Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving Day and will reopen for a shortened session on Friday, closing at 1 p.m. ET. With roughly three hours of trading left for November, major U.S. indexes are on track to finish the month in the red, according to CNBC calculations.
As of Wednesday’s close, the S&P 500 has slipped 0.4% month to date, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 0.29% for the same period. The Nasdaq Composite has retreated 2.15%, significantly underperforming the other indexes as technology stocks faced headwinds in November.
Unless there is a dramatic rally in Friday’s brief session—a move that could raise concerns about the market’s sustainability—the indexes are set to break their multi-month winning streaks. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average have both advanced for the past six months, with the Nasdaq Composite rising for seven consecutive months.
This potential downturn is a departure from the historical trend. According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, the S&P 500 has averaged a 1.8% gain in November since 1950. In years following a U.S. presidential election, it typically rises by 1.6%. However, this year is proving to be atypical, and analysts say the market’s path in the months and years ahead may not follow historical patterns.
As of Thursday night, U.S. futures were largely flat. The U.S. market closure coincided with modest gains in Europe, where the Stoxx 600 edged up 0.14% after recovering from early losses.
