Human Mobility in Post-Climate America
Millions of Americans will relocate in the coming decades due to climate change. Will this movement of people from near and far be chaotic, inequitable, and financially ruinous, or can it spark new economic growth and opportunity? Please join the Future of Land and Housing Program at New America for a conversation between scholar Jesse M. Keenan and journalist Vann R. Newkirk II on the rapidly shifting landscape of climate-driven migration in the United States. Drawing from Keenan’s new book, North: The Future of Post-Climate America (Oxford University Press), as well as Newkirk’s ongoing reporting for The Atlantic, the pair will explore how escalating climate impacts are already reshaping where Americans can and choose to live, from “dead zones” that people are leaving to “receiving communities” that are attracting new people. Together, Keenan and Newkirk will offer not only a diagnosis of our current climate crisis, but a hopeful path forward towards a more equitable and resilient America SPEAKERS Jesse M. Keenan, Favrot II Associate Professor of Sustainable Real Estate and Urban Planning; Director, Center on Climate Change and Urbanism, Tulane University.
