Helldivers 2 studio CEO says despite improvements, there’s “more work to be done” with performance patches: “The intent is that new releases don’t bork quality but build on it”
Helldivers 2 devs are aware that there’s still “more work to be done” to bring the shooter’s performance to the level it should be, but at the very least, the goal is for new releases like next week’s Warbond not to “bork quality but build on it.” Earlier this year, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani acknowledged that Helldivers 2 has accumulated a lot of technical debt an issue that’s led to performance woes that players have been complaining about for months. Last month, Arrowhead took a “big step forward” with a chunky patch full of over 200 bug fixes and optimizations, but Jorjani noted that more patches were coming, as “performance will take many many more months of work to get to even more meaningful improvement.” Yesterday, Arrowhead didn’t announce a new performance-improving patch, but the Helldivers 2 Python Commandos Warbond, which is set to add some highly sought-after weapons including a flamethrower drone. It all looks very exciting, but it raises the question: What about those performance patches? One fan has taken to Discord asking how Arrowhead feels about its progress with patches so far, and how much more work is expected to be done. “Things have improved,” Jorjani admits, but “there’s more work to be done.” He continues: “The intent is that new releases don’t bork quality but build on it.” This will no doubt be a relief for many as Helldivers 2 struggled with its performance in recent months, many questioned why Arrowhead didn’t shift its focus more to fixing things rather than keeping up with its speedy pace of new content. This is also reflected in a further comment from community manager Mitchell ‘Miitchimus’ Ayre, who responds to a fan’s question about whether Arrowhead’s approach to playtesting updates has changed since the Halo-themed Warbond earlier this year. “I don’t know how much I can go into it (it’s above my paygrade) but we slowed down our cadence as you may have noticed and worked harder to make sure our launches will have more time for testing,” Miitchimus confirms.
