Joel Embiid questionable, Tyrese Maxey probable for 76ers vs. Magic
CAMDEN, N. J. Joel Embiid’s seven-game absence due to right knee soreness could end Tuesday, with the 76ers center ruled questionable for a visit from the Orlando Magic. Embiid played six of the first nine games of the season, managing his way through left knee soreness in the leg that had meniscus repair surgery nearly two years ago. The seven-time All-Star reported soreness and swelling in his right knee and hasn’t played since going off for 29 points in 26 minutes on Nov. 8, his highest point total and most minutes of the season. At practice Monday afternoon in Camden, Nick Nurse was as guarded as usual on Embiid’s status. “Same as it was,” Nurse said. “He’s still day-to-day.” Nurse said the team was, “waiting for the doctors to clear” him. Embiid has practiced with some frequency in recent weeks and was a full participant on Monday. Both Nurse and Tyrese Maxey attested to his Embiid’s mentality as remaining strong. “He’s a little frustrated about it, but I think he was cognizant that he was feeling something there and he immediately wanted to get it figured out,” Nurse said. “He’s trying and doing a lot of stuff to get back on the floor. His spirits are good.” “You just want him to be healthy and able to play,” Maxey said. “You want him to be happy. As long as he’s happy, then I’m happy. At the end of day, yes, basketball is our career, but his life is his life. You only get one life, so you got to live life to the fullest. And as long as people are happy, his family’s good, he’s good. And if he can get on the basketball court as much as possible, then I’m happy.” • • • Maxey appears happy and healthy after favoring his shoulder during Sunday’s 127-117 loss to the Miami Heat. He’s listed as probable. He got caught up on a steal very early in the first quarter and was rubbing what the team called a right shoulder sprain. But he managed 27 points in 36 minutes and is listed as probable for Orlando. “It happened the second, third play of the game,” Maxey said. “I got a steal and felt a little weird and didn’t feel comfortable. But I’ll be fine. I’m great.” • • • Paul George is on the injury report with a right ankle sprain, which is not the left knee management he’s dealt with. He’s listed as probable. George scored 10 points in 20: 13 on Sunday, his shortest stint in three games this season. He had been up to 24: 42 against Milwaukee. George could get two days of rest before Friday’s game at Brooklyn. The 76ers don’t have another back-to-back until the end of next week, against Golden State and at Milwaukee. “I think we’ve just got to continue to grow his time on the floor,” Nurse said. “The minute restriction thing has to grow. Hopefully it keeps heading in the right direction. But that’s it really. “We found some ways to use him yesterday, especially defensively. I didn’t feel like he got nearly as many good looks last night as he got against Milwaukee. But I think he’s moving good and an opportunity to get him going and get him some shots is going to be important. It looks like the shooting is there and good, and his ability to score will continue to improve. But I think it’s conditioning and more minutes, and all that stuff just takes a bit of time.” Adem Bona (ankle), VJ Edgecombe (calf) and Kelly Oubre (knee) remain out. That group includes two opening-night starters. After the avalanche of man-games lost last year, Maxey said that the team is a little better at adapting this year. “It’s a little different, I guess,” he said. “We just have a good mentality this year on it. Whoever’s playing is playing. Whoever’s not is not, and they’re going to cheer the teammates on. And kind of just flow right into a spot, flow right into the system of what we’re doing, of trying to move the ball, everybody being able to touch the ball, everybody make plays, everybody shoot the ball, do different things like that.”.
