Always Moving: Jonesboro Invests in Community Connections
Jonesboro is living up to its motto, Always Moving. The city is making bold strides in improving multimodal connectivity across the community, with infrastructure improvements that will have regional impact. Public transportation With an eye toward connecting the Arkansas State University campus with the greater community, Jonesboro’s public transit system is currently undergoing a major transformation. A new route, introduced in August 2025, connects the campus to the rest of the city. New hybrid trolleys were integrated into the transit system earlier this year, too. Jonesboro Municipal Airport In 2020, Jonesboro secured a $5 million grant from the U. S. Economic Development Administration to shore up air connectivity. The funds, paired with $1. 3 million from city coffers, will be used to support reconstruction of a commercial terminal at the Jonesboro Municipal Airport. Earlier this year, the Jonesboro Municipal Airport broke ground on a commercial terminal improvement that is expected to be completed in July 2026. The 13, 000 SF terminal will feature enhanced amenities and TSA facilities, food service and passenger flow improvements. Other upgrades at Jonesboro Municipal Airport include strengthening and lengthening of the primary runway, taxiways and apron pavement so the airport can safely support larger aircraft and also open the door to new opportunities for regional and national air connections. In 2024, the Arkansas Division of Aeronautics named the Jonesboro Municipal Airport the Airport of the Year, pointing to its strategic plans for future growth. Parks & Rec Jonesboro’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan lays out a long-term vision for parks, trails and recreation that’s rooted in accessibility, connectivity and inclusive design. The parks master plan includes building and upgrading parks to create an interconnected network of open space and trails accessible to people of all mobility levels. In 2023, Jonesboro’s Connectivity Advisory Committee was formed. Their mission is to prioritize cycle, pedestrian and shared-use projects to link neighborhoods, schools, parks and public transit. Full-funded trails from downtown to A-State and around Aggie Road, plus shared and side-paths in underserved areas, will bridge the gap for the approximately 20% of Jonesboro residents who don’t have access to a vehicle. The connectivity program aligns with a quality-of-life and connectivity Master Plan, which envisions 79 miles of trails citywide. Driven by innovative policy and community input, Jonesboro is making transformative moves today that ensure equitable access and sustainable growth for tomorrow. Jonesboro is Always Moving helping residents stay on the move, however suits them.
