South Salisbury ups ISO rating to two
The South Salisbury Fire Department has boosted its ISO Class rating to two, a change that fire department officials say reflects their continued commitment to the community. “Our organization continues to meet the challenges of an ever-changing environment coupled with an increase in service demand. We remain successful because of the dedication, professionalism and drive of our personnel, the unwavering support of our board of directors, and our collective commitment to fulfilling the mission of this organization. I am extremely proud of our team as we continue to move forward with strength, determination and purpose,” Fire Chief Jason Burnett is quoted as saying in a Facebook post by the department. The rating is created by the National Insurance Services Office (ISO) and runs from one to 10. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating suggests that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also significantly lower insurance rates in that fire district. An ISO Class No. 1 rating is the best an organization can achieve in the fire service. According to the department, the new rating and related insurance rates will go into effect on March 1, 2026. It urged property owners in the district to contact their insurance company about the change. The upgrade brings South Salisbury into rare air in North Carolina and Rowan County. Only three departments in Rowan County and approximately 40 in the state have ISO 1 ratings: Salisbury, Granite Quarry and Faith. South Salisbury joins Landis, China Grove and Spencer with an ISO 2 rating, among approximately 80 in the state. Notably, it became the only county department to earn the ISO 2 rating (residents in the East Landis Fire District live in the county but are served by Landis).
