Matter 1.5 with native camera support could come to SmartThings
Samsung has been one of the first brands to support the newest versions of Matter. And Matter now has a newer version-1. 5-that brings support for more types of devices. This new Matter version could come to SmartThings sometime next year. The company recently announced a faster and newer SmartThings Hub with Matter support. Matter 1. 5 brings support for cameras, soil sensors, and more The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has announced Matter 1. 5. It supports cameras, including video doorbell cameras, indoor and outdoor security cameras, floodlight cameras, and baby cameras. Live audio and video streaming, two-way talk, pan-tilt-zoom controls, multiple streams, motion detection, privacy options, and flexible storage options are supported. Video playback and cloud storage will be handled by the device maker. Matter 1. 5 does not support on-device audio and video analysis for cameras. Most modern cameras should be able to support this new version of Matter, but the final decision rests with the manufacturers, as they would need to spend resources on making their older cameras compatible. The $199 Xthings Ulticam V2 will be the first security camera that will support Matter 1. 5. It will be available for purchase in the USA in December 2025. Matter 1. 5 also brings support for closures like drapes, garage doors, gates, and window shades. There is support for various types of motions for closures, including opening, rotating, and sliding. It also brings support for soil sensors, which means plant lovers can keep an eye on exactly what is happening with their plants. Based on soil moisture and temperature, watering automations can be created. With improved energy management, Matter 1. 5 can provide real-time pricing, tariff, and carbon data from energy providers. Devices can then use this information to offer more reliable energy consumption and cost tracking. SmartThings brought support for Matter 1. 4 in April 2025. That was a gap of just around five months between the release of Matter 1. 4 and Samsung bringing it to SmartThings. So, we expect the South Korean firm to bring Matter 1. 5 support to SmartThings within a year from now.
