Joe Thornton’s wife Tabea debunks conspiracy theory about Hall of Famer’s ‘dyed beard’

Joe Thornton’s iconic beard has fueled jokes and conspiracies for years, but this week his wife Tabea Thornton put the speculation to rest. Appearing on the Never Offside podcast with hosts Julie and Cat, the Swiss-born wife of the newly minted 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee finally addressed the long-running fan theory that the Hall of Famer dyed his legendary facial hair. “This is the coloring,” she said with a laugh. “It’s gray on the side, that’s just how it grew in. He does not color it.” Tabea also revealed she actually prefers Joe without the trademark beard. She laughed while explaining that he has shaved it a few times over the years but it always grows back almost instantly. “He shaved it a few times but it grows right back so fast.” When the hosts joked that she should make the beard the prize in a competition the next time she beats him, she grinned calling it a “good idea.” Joe Thornton’s wife opens up on having Macklin Celebrini in the family During the podcast, Tabea Thornton also offered a rare inside look at what life has been like with San Jose Sharks phenom Macklin Celebrini living under the same roof as the Thornton family. She explained that opening their home to young players isn’t new for them but Celebrini is the first to stay long-term. Tabea said the decision came naturally noting that Joe once lived with a billet family himself and that their own children love having a young player around. “Mac is such a great guy and everybody loves having him here,” she said. “We are in a rental right now so it’s not very luxurious, but he’s great. We love having him. And it’s great for River, and it’s great for Isla too, her little friends like to come over, you know.” She also shared that Macklin Celebrini joins the family for sports nights and games of Rummikub, a routine that has turned into a full-on competition with Celebrini now “dethroning” her as the household champion. “They watch a lot of sports together and then we play Rummikub together, it’s our thing. Actually, he’s kind of dethroned me now,” she laughed. She described Celebrini as polite and appreciative of whatever she cooks, adding that his healthy habits fit smoothly with the family’s routines. Tabea also touched on the balance between supporting a rising star and giving him space, saying that hockey talk between Joe and Macklin tends to happen casually while the family is cooking or watching TV. According to her, Celebrini is on the right track and simply needs room to grow at his own pace.
