Many people in South Africa have reportedly quit their jobs and sold off possessions, including cars, following a prophecy by Pastor Joshua Mhlakela that the world will end on September 23.
### The Prophecy
Pastor Mhlakela appeared on the CENTTWINZ TV YouTube channel, where he claimed that God would come to “rescue Christians out of the world” on September 23 and 24. This predicted date coincides with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, a time some Christians associate symbolically with the rapture—the anticipated return of Christ.
### What Is Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year and holds significant spiritual meaning. Some Christian groups link this period to prophetic events surrounding the rapture, which is believed to be the moment when Jesus Christ returns to gather his faithful.
### The Pastor’s Vision
According to Mhlakela, God’s judgment will leave the world “unrecognizable,” and the rapture will occur with such force that it could cause the Earth to shake. The pastor shared a vivid vision: “I saw Jesus sitting on his throne, and I could hear him very loud and clear saying, ‘I am coming soon.’”
### Social Media Buzz
The prophecy quickly went viral, especially on TikTok, where users are actively discussing the prediction. Some have even humorously questioned whether they can take their pets to heaven during the rapture.
### Rapture Readiness and Skepticism
In response to the prophecy, many individuals are preparing by selling their cars, quitting jobs, and even assembling “post-rapture kits” for those who might be left behind. Stand-up comedian Kevin Fredericks commented on the situation: “They are selling their cars, clothes, some people are making post-rapture kits for the people who are left behind.” He also questioned the prophecy’s validity, pointing out the logistical issue of a single global date and time for an event such as the rapture.
### A Personal Account
One TikTok user, Tilahun Desalegn, who has over 25,500 followers, shared that he sold his five-year-old car in preparation for “catching a flight to heaven” in September. He promised to post an apology video if the rapture does not occur as predicted. Desalegn stated, “I will acknowledge I was very likely deceived and that I was not hearing from God,” adding that he would probably avoid discussing the rapture in the future.

As the anticipated date passes, many eyes remain fixed on the outcomes of these predictions and the conversations they continue to spark online and offline.
