Lions Announce Devastating Sam LaPorta News Before Eagles Game
The Detroit Lions boast the No. 6 offense in the NFL, but that unit suffered a significant setback just one day before their crucial Week 11 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team announced that All-Pro tight end Sam LaPorta has been placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next four games.
LaPorta has been a key contributor this season, ranking fifth among all tight ends in receiving yards (489), ninth in receptions (40), and 13th in touchdowns (three). His absence means he will miss critical games, including the Sunday Night Football showdown against the Eagles, the Thanksgiving Day matchup against division rival Green Bay Packers in Week 13, and the Thursday Night Football contest against the Dallas Cowboys, who are still vying for a playoff spot.
The 24-year-old pass-catcher’s earliest possible return is Week 15, when the Lions face the Los Angeles Rams.
LaPorta’s loss is a major blow to Detroit’s 10th-ranked passing offense. He currently ranks second on the team to Amon-Ra St. Brown in receptions, targets (49), and yards, and is third in touchdowns.
In his absence, the Lions are expected to rely on backup tight end Brock Wright, who is the only other tight end besides LaPorta to catch a pass this season. In nine appearances, Wright has recorded nine catches on 11 targets for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Additionally, Detroit is likely to elevate 28-year-old tight end Shane Zylstra from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Philadelphia. Over three seasons—all with the Lions—Zylstra has logged 15 receptions, 116 yards, and four touchdowns.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Lions adjust their offense heading into this pivotal stretch of the season.
