Oliver Ames wins third set set to claim Div. 2 volleyball championship
BILLERICA — Oliver Ames claimed a thrilling 3-2 tie-break set victory against Wayland to win the MIAA Division 2 volleyball state championship on Saturday afternoon at Billerica High School.
The Tigers dropped the opening two sets (25-22, 25-22) and faced the prospect of another heartbreaking loss in the championship game after falling to Westboro the previous season. Instead, Oliver Ames rallied impressively, rattling off three consecutive set victories to complete the reverse sweep and secure the first Division 2 title in program history.
“We’ve accomplished what we had set for this year and executed that really well,” said senior Evan Casey.
Wayland won the opening set despite a strong effort from Oliver Ames, highlighted by several kills from Chelsea Wagner. Undeterred by the initial setback, the Tigers came out strong in the second set, maintaining a lead for the majority of the time. However, Wayland managed to creep back, eventually taking over and closing in on the win with a key play from Fiona Strehle.
With Oliver Ames mounting a comeback, Wayland kept the pressure on, never letting the Tigers get too comfortable. Strong plays from Wayland’s Audrey Nugent and Willa Suratt kept the Warriors competitive, but Oliver Ames ultimately pulled ahead, closing out the third set 25-16 with an ace.
Wayland struggled at the start of the fourth set as Oliver Ames pulled ahead. The Tigers’ Taylor Donohue contributed several kills, helping secure the second set victory for Oliver Ames at 25-14.
With both teams tied at two sets apiece, the match entered its decisive fifth and final set. Both teams played with high intensity and determination, but Oliver Ames came out on top, 15-11, with the final kill delivered by Chelsea Wagner.
“After the second set today, we just came together as a team,” said Casey, reflecting on the team’s resilience and unity.
