New Surge in Gun Ownership Among the Left: Good or Bad?
The Left Is Arming Up — And That Might Be Good for the Second Amendment Community
The political left, including the LGBTQ+ community, has been increasingly exercising their rights under the American Second Amendment. While this trend may cause some consternation among certain groups, it could ultimately prove beneficial for the broader gun rights community.
For decades, the typical image of gun owners in America has been white, rural, and Republican. However, that image is changing. Gun clubs, trainers, Second Amendment advocates, and academic researchers observe a growing number of liberals, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals purchasing firearms — a shift particularly noticeable since former President Trump’s reelection in 2024.
**Growth in Liberal Gun Ownership**
This story is based on more than 30 interviews. Among the voices is David Phillips, who serves on the training team of the Liberal Gun Club. The club, which has chapters in over 30 states, provides a safe space for liberals to train and learn about guns. According to Phillips, club membership has surged from 2,700 in November to 4,500 today, and requests for training have increased fivefold.
Phillips emphasizes the positive aspects of this trend: “As long as these people are law-abiding citizens, this is their right, and they seem to be going about things the right way: legal purchase, training, responsible gun ownership.”
While some of their stated reasons for arming themselves may seem unusual — Phillips notes concerns about right-wing supporters who feel emboldened to commit violence against people they dislike — their approach to gun ownership appears responsible.
**Political Pushback**
The White House has dismissed NPR’s reporting on this subject. In a statement, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, “Instead of covering Americans exercising their Second Amendment Right and trying to disingenuously blame President Trump, NPR should highlight the dangerous language from elected Democrats that has driven leftists to commit actual violence against Republicans, including the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk.”
Despite the political back-and-forth, it’s important to recognize that while people on the left, especially in the LGBTQ+ community, do face threats, those threats are not predominantly from the American right.
**A Call to the Second Amendment Community**
Regardless of the reasons behind this increase in gun ownership on the left, the key point is that these new gun owners seem to be following the same responsible practices embraced by the broader Second Amendment community — lawful purchase, training, and respect for the rules.
To those newly armed individuals, the best advice is simple: “If you want a gun, buy one. If you want to keep it, join a pro-Second Amendment organization of your choice, and pay attention to their candidate recommendations during elections.”
In today’s unsettled nation, threats exist — but they do not primarily originate from the political right.
**How the Pro-Gun Community Should Respond**
The pro-gun movement should welcome these new gun owners with open arms, just as it would welcome any new, law-abiding shooter. Their ethnic backgrounds or sexual orientations are irrelevant. The sole concerns should be:
– Are they complying with existing laws?
– Will they handle their firearms responsibly?
– Will they engage with the broader pro-Second Amendment community and come to see that any fears they have about this community are unfounded?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then it is time to say: “Welcome to the movement. Welcome to recognizing what the Second Amendment really means.”
