Surprise: Commanders’ Marcus Mariota leads NFL in passing statistic
Which current NFL quarterback is throwing 10+ yard passes at the highest rate this season? The answer might surprise you: it’s Washington’s Marcus Mariota. He is airing out passes of 10 or more air yards on 42.7% of his attempts, leading the league in this category.
Despite the challenges the Washington wide receivers have faced—whether it’s difficulty getting open or staying healthy—Mariota continues to push the ball downfield more than any other quarterback. This reflects offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s approach, which avoids settling for dump-off passes and check-downs. Kingsbury is determined to keep stretching the field, moving the chains, and finding ways to loosen up the defense.
This aggressive passing strategy also helps open up the running game. After five games, Washington leads the entire NFL in yards per carry, a testament to their balanced offensive attack.
Last week against the Detroit Lions, Mariota connected on three passes to Treylon Burks, all for a total of 58 receiving yards, including a long reception of 37 yards. Rookie Jaylin Lane from Virginia Tech had just one target but made it count with a 41-yard catch. Tight end Zach Ertz also contributed with a notable 30-yard reception.
Unfortunately, Mariota will be without Burks this week as Burks recovers from a broken finger sustained against the Lions. While the Commanders have dropped five consecutive games, it’s important to put those results into context. The defense has ranked near or at the bottom in the last four contests, and the running game has noticeably declined over the same span.
All things considered, it’s crucial to separate Mariota’s individual performance from the overall team struggles. With a thin wide receiver group and defensive effectiveness limited this season, Mariota’s downfield passing rate stands out as a bright spot in Washington’s offense.
