Maine AG: Lincoln officers justified in fatal shooting
The Maine Attorney General’s Office has determined that two Lincoln police officers were justified in shooting and killing a man on February 12.
Derek Beach, 37, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the state medical examiner.
On January 14, 2025, Beach was involved in a domestic incident with his estranged wife, who later obtained a protection from abuse order. This order barred him from contacting her or their children, as well as from returning to their home, the Attorney General’s office reported.
Shortly after being served with the order, Beach contacted family members in violation of its terms. As a result, he was taken into protective custody for a mental health evaluation. He was subsequently arrested and later released on bail, retaining the same restrictions.
On February 12, dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting that Beach was at the home armed with a knife. Two adults and Beach’s two children were inside when he forced his way into the residence, according to the AG’s office.
Sgt. Michael Winslow and Officer Kristofer Milner arrived at the scene to find Beach injured in the chest and holding a knife.
The Attorney General’s Office found that the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Beach refused to drop the knife. After using a Taser on him, Beach charged at the officers, prompting them to fire their weapons.
Beach died at the scene.
