
Towns, Shamet power Knicks to a 140-130 win over Heat in NBA Cup game
NEW YORK (AP) – Karl-Anthony Towns scored 39 points and Landry Shamet added a career-high 36 points off the bench as the New York Knicks defeated the Miami Heat 140-130 in an NBA Cup game on Friday night.
Jordan Clarkson contributed 25 points, Mikal Bridges added 15, and Josh Hart recorded his first triple-double of the season with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. The Knicks posted a season-high point total in the victory.
Jalen Brunson missed his first game of the season due to a sprained right ankle sustained in Wednesday’s loss to Orlando. Meanwhile, OG Anunoby left the game after just two minutes with a left hamstring strain and did not return.
On the Miami side, Norman Powell led the team with a season-high 38 points. Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 23, while Andrew Wiggins and Kel’el Ware each added 15 points. Pelle Larsson contributed 14 points, and Davion Mitchell scored 11.
The Knicks and Heat are now tied 1-1 in Group C play.
The game was closely contested in the first half. The Knicks trailed 62-61 in the second quarter before Towns connected on consecutive 3-pointers and followed with a pair of free throws. New York took control from there, leading 78-68 at halftime.
Miami fought back and got within two points at 104-102, but the Knicks held firm, ending the third quarter with a 110-104 lead.
In the final quarter, after Jaquez hit a layup to open the period, the Knicks responded with a decisive 10-0 run. New York extended their biggest lead to 125-110 on Shamet’s 3-pointer with 6:55 remaining. Miami never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Heat had opened the game strongly by scoring the first seven points and held a 35-32 lead after the first quarter.
