Jimmy Kimmel Confirms Bandleader Cleto Escobedo III’s Death in Touching Tribute
**Cleto Escobedo III, Jimmy Kimmel’s Close Friend and Band Leader, Passes Away at 59**
Cleto Escobedo III, the longtime bandleader of *Cleto and the Cletones* and close friend of Jimmy Kimmel, has tragically passed away at the age of 59.
Kimmel and Escobedo shared a lifelong friendship that began in childhood. The two grew up together as neighbors in Las Vegas, forging a bond that lasted over five decades. While Kimmel pursued a career in comedy, Escobedo followed his passion for music.
In 1995, Escobedo formed the band *Cleto and the Cletones*, where he showcased his talents on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones. He also occasionally contributed vocals. The band featured other notable members such as his father, Cleto Escobedo Sr., keyboardist Jeff Babko, guitarist Toshi Yanagi, bassist Jimmy Earl, and drummer Jonathan Dresel.
Jimmy Kimmel announced Cleto’s passing in a heartfelt Instagram tribute, saying:
> “Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician, and man, my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III. To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement. Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true. Cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children, and parents in your prayers.”
Kimmel is expected to address Escobedo’s passing on an upcoming episode of *Jimmy Kimmel Live*.
Reflecting on their enduring friendship, Kimmel previously spoke about Cleto on his show when Escobedo turned 50:
> “We began a lifetime of friendship that was highlighted by the kind of torture that only an older brother can inflict on you without being arrested,” Kimmel joked, referring to the many pranks they played on each other over the years.
At this time, no information has been released regarding the cause of Escobedo’s death. Fans and friends continue to mourn the loss of a beloved musician and cherished companion.
