‘This is on them’: Trump admin scorched after systemic ‘torture’ of deportees exposed
The Trump administration is facing a wave of condemnation after new reporting revealed details about the systemic “torture” migrants were subjected to following their deportation to El Salvador’s notoriously dangerous CECOT prison.
As part of its broader mass deportation policy, the Trump administration sent around 250 migrants to CECOT. While the prison’s torturous conditions have been well documented, a recent investigation by The New York Times shed new light on the severity of the abuses. The outlet spoke with 40 former inmates whose testimonies, supported by forensic experts, indicated “the existence of an institutional policy and practice of torture,” according to the report released Sunday.
The former inmates described harrowing experiences: they were beaten repeatedly, subjected to waterboarding-like torture, stripped naked and forced to perform sexual acts, and denied lifesaving medication. Notably, of the 40 men interviewed, only three had criminal histories beyond immigration and traffic offenses—contradicting Trump’s pledge to deport only the “worst of the worst.”
The detailed account of these torturous conditions stunned many critics. Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan highlighted the need for future accountability, urging Democrats, should they regain control of Congress and the White House, not to forget the treatment migrants endured under the Trump administration.
“This is what Trump, [Vice President JD] Vance, [Homeland Security Secretary Kristi] Noem, and [White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen] Miller did. This is on them,” Hasan wrote on X to his nearly 2 million followers. “There needs to be criminal accountability if the Dems ever get back into power.”
Activist, lawyer, and Trump critic George Conway echoed Hasan’s call for justice. Addressing his more than 2.2 million followers, Conway emphasized that the Trump administration should also be held accountable for its targeted strikes against suspected drug trafficking operations—some of which former officials have since questioned.
“Absolutely, positively,” Conway wrote on X Sunday, affirming Hasan’s statement. “And for the [Caribbean] boat strikes, too.”
These revelations have brought renewed scrutiny on the Trump administration’s immigration and enforcement policies, sparking calls for investigations and accountability from across the political spectrum.
