An IndiGo Airlines flight from Kanpur to Delhi experienced a nearly three-hour delay on Sunday after a rat was spotted inside the cabin.
The incident took place at Kanpur airport, where all 140 passengers had already boarded the aircraft ahead of its scheduled 2:55 PM departure. The situation unfolded when a passenger noticed a rodent onboard and immediately alerted the cabin crew. As a precautionary measure, all passengers were promptly evacuated from the aircraft.
Kanpur airport media in-charge Vivek Singh confirmed to NDTV that the rat sighting led to the evacuation for safety reasons. Subsequently, a thorough search operation was conducted to locate the rodent, lasting approximately one and a half hours.
Originally scheduled to depart Kanpur at 2:55 PM and arrive in Delhi by 4:10 PM, the flight finally took off at 6:03 PM and landed in Delhi at 7:16 PM.
This incident highlights the risks posed by rodents on aircraft, as they can cause serious damage by chewing through electrical wires or other critical components, potentially jeopardizing flight safety.
Such occurrences are not isolated. Earlier this year, a Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus A330 was grounded in Colombo due to a rat sighting. In 2023, a VietJet flight between Bangkok and Taipei encountered disruptions mid-air after an albino rat and an otter escaped from a passenger’s hand luggage.
These events underscore the importance of stringent pest control measures in aviation to ensure passenger safety and prevent delays.
