Packers battling with Panthers, Vikings over CB returning from spinal fusion procedure
The Green Bay Packers are looking to add depth to their defense, specifically at the cornerback position. After opting not to make a move at the trade deadline, the team is now focused on the free-agent market. One player generating buzz among teams is Asante Samuel Jr., who is making a return from injury.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, before the Packers get a chance to evaluate Samuel, he is scheduled to visit with the Carolina Panthers first. Schultz tweeted, “Sources: The Packers and Vikings are also scheduled to have visits with CB Asante Samuel Jr. But Panthers are first today, I’m told.”
Samuel has been cleared to play following spinal fusion surgery. The former 2021 second-round pick spent his first three NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, appearing in 46 regular-season games. During that time, he recorded 176 tackles, six interceptions, and one fumble recovery.
There is a strong group of teams interested in Samuel, many of whom could benefit from added cornerback depth. The Packers will need to make a compelling case and find the right role for him to convince Samuel to sign with them.
Competing with Green Bay is the Panthers, who recently defeated the Packers and boast a solid cornerback group led by Jaycee Horn. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings, who have shown strong defensive play this season, are also in the mix and could offer an intriguing opportunity for Samuel.
While the Packers’ defense has been solid this year, their offense has been inconsistent. Securing a reliable cornerback like Samuel could help stabilize the defense further. Coupled with improved offensive performance, the Packers could become a formidable team as the season progresses.
