Golf Icon Phil Mickelson Calls for Ilhan Omar to Be Sent Back to Somalia
Professional golfer Phil Mickelson has criticized Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) following her refusal to retract controversial comments about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Mickelson, a six-time major champion, took to X on Saturday to express his strong disapproval of Omar’s remarks. He wrote, “Ilhan spews hate every time she opens her mouth, she came here fraudulently and will hopefully be sent back to Somalia soon.” He went further to call for Omar’s removal from Congress and deportation.
The golfer’s comments came after Omar’s interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, in which the Minnesota lawmaker compared Kirk to Dr. Frankenstein, suggesting that Kirk was “killed by the monster he created.” Omar stated, “What I find jarring is that there’s so many people willing to excuse the most reprehensible things that he said, that they agree with that, that they’re willing to have monuments for him, that they want to create a day to honor him, and that they want to produce resolutions in the House of Congress honoring his life and legacy.”
She added, “I am not going to sit here and be judged for not wanting to honor any legacy this man has left behind, that should be in the dustbin of history, and we should hopefully move on and forget the hate that he spewed every day.”
Omar’s comments have sparked strong criticism from Republicans and conservative leaders since Kirk was assassinated earlier this month. Kirk was fatally shot while speaking to students at Utah Valley University on September 10.
Mickelson, who has frequently spoken about Kirk’s death, has continued to share posts highlighting Kirk’s legacy. On Saturday evening, he responded to a question on social media regarding whether pride flags should be banned from military installations, emphasizing that his response reflected Kirk’s message.
Meanwhile, Omar has faced mounting backlash within Congress. Earlier this week, she narrowly avoided censure when a resolution introduced by Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) failed to advance. The resolution aimed to formally censure Omar and strip her of committee assignments over what Mace described as “vile comments mocking the assassination of Kirk.”
The measure was tabled after several House Republicans voted against it, a move that ignited anger among the party’s conservative base and highlighted divisions within GOP ranks over how to respond to Omar’s statements.
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative activist, was killed by a far-left extremist. His death has prompted vigils, tributes, and increased calls for accountability regarding rhetoric targeting political figures.
Phil Mickelson’s outspoken remarks contribute to a growing chorus of public figures demanding consequences for Omar’s statements. Known widely by his nickname “Lefty,” Mickelson is among the most high-profile voices outside of politics urging action to remove her from Congress.
As the controversy continues, Omar has stood firm, refusing to retract her statements and maintaining that she will not honor Kirk’s legacy. The issue remains a significant point of contention in Congress, particularly as Republicans consider whether to reintroduce efforts to censure her.
