Deion Sanders making Colorado quarterback change for West Virginia matchup
Colorado Football’s Season Three with Deion Sanders Unravels Quickly
The Colorado Buffaloes’ third season under head coach Deion Sanders has taken a sharp downturn, highlighted by an embarrassing loss to Arizona. The situation has reached a point where “Coach Prime” is expected to make a significant change at quarterback ahead of their upcoming game against West Virginia.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Colorado is set to shake up its roster. “Colorado is currently expected to make a QB change and start freshman Julian Lewis versus West Virginia this weekend, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz posted on X (formerly Twitter). This move means that the Buffaloes will start their third different quarterback this season.
Julian Lewis previously shared reps with Kaidon Salter before Salter won the starting job. Now, with Lewis stepping in, Sanders has taken to the microphone to defend his players and the team’s leadership despite the disappointing results in 2025.
Colorado’s Offense Takes a Step Back in 2025
The once-promising era under Deion Sanders — marked by stars like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders — has seen a massive decline. Colorado currently ranks 15th out of 16 Big 12 teams in total offense. Only Oklahoma State and Arizona State have scored fewer touchdowns than the Buffaloes.
The season began with high hopes after Sanders landed transfer quarterback Kaidon Salter, who had led Liberty to its first Fiesta Bowl appearance. While Salter provided some dual-threat capabilities, his performance has been inconsistent. He extended plays with his legs but often lost yardage and took costly sacks.
Salter’s stats this season include 1,242 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, six interceptions, and 292 rushing yards with five touchdowns on QB keepers. Despite his efforts, the offense has struggled to find rhythm and consistency.
Preparing for the Future with Julian Lewis
The quarterback switch to Julian Lewis signals Colorado’s focus on the future. Lewis was a high-profile recruiting win for Sanders — the freshman flipped his commitment from USC to Colorado, which was a major coup for the Buffaloes’ recruiting trail.
Looking ahead, Colorado faces no ranked opponents for the remainder of the season but still hosts a crucial home game against a 6-3 Arizona State team. The Buffaloes must win their next three games to secure bowl eligibility.
With the quarterback change and the pressure mounting, Colorado’s final stretch will be critical in defining this season and setting the tone for the program’s future under Coach Prime.
