Suns’ Jordan Ott shares haunting first memory of Victor Wembanyama

PHOENIX – Jordan Ott might not have been an NBA coach for very long, but neither has star player Victor Wembanyama. The current Phoenix Suns head coach is in his first season with the team, while Wembanyama is in just his third.

The two first encountered each other during a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs, which took place shortly after the NBA in-season tournament in the 2023-24 season. In that matchup, the French phenom posted an impressive stat line: 30 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and six blocks.

It was unlike anything Ott had ever seen before.

Even though Suns players are excited to face Wembanyama, Ott acknowledges that there’s no ceiling on what the former Rookie of the Year can achieve. The game in December 2023 left a strong impression on him.

“Not a great memory,” Ott said with a chuckle during a pregame interview. “Just his skill set at that size is different. I think we’ve seen it before—(Kristaps) Porzingis-ish—but this one is different. His speed, his skill, the ability to maneuver in mid-air, and the ability to still get to the rim after all that stuff.”

It’s not only Wembanyama’s size that presents a major challenge. As Ott explained, it’s the combination of his strength, size, speed, athleticism, and body control that makes him so difficult to guard.

For someone listed at 7’4″, Wembanyama doesn’t move or play like his height would suggest. His multi-faceted game, rooted in tough shot-making, highlight-worthy rim protection, and what many call “alien” talent, continues to earn admiration across the NBA.

Not to mention, his Spurs team is off to a blazing 5-0 start. While Wembanyama is clearly the focal point, teammates like Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell have also been contributing consistently.

Sunday’s game could present the Suns with a chance to hand San Antonio their first loss of the season. Or, it could turn into another 48-minute nightmare that Ott and his team will have to endure.
