Sridhar Vembu, Founder and Chief Scientist of Zoho Corporation and former CEO, has called on Indian H-1B visa holders in the United States to consider returning to India. His appeal comes in the wake of a recent increase in H-1B visa fees implemented by the administration of former President Donald Trump.

The new fee is a one-time charge applicable only to new visa petitions and does not impact current visa holders. However, the hike has sparked concerns and uncertainty among many Indian professionals working in the US.

### A Historical Perspective: Drawing Parallels to 1947

Vembu drew an analogy with the 1947 Partition of India, a period when countless families had to abandon their homes and start afresh. He noted, “I am sad to say this, but for Indians on an H-1B visa in America, this may be that time. Come back home.”

He acknowledged that rebuilding life in India might be challenging and could take up to five years, but stressed that it would ultimately strengthen those who take this bold step.

### Returning to India Is a Brave Choice

The Zoho founder emphasized that choosing to return should not be viewed as an act of fear or retreat. Instead, he encouraged H-1B visa holders to embrace the move courageously.

“Do not live in fear. Make the bold move. You will do well,” said Vembu.

His remarks come amid reports of hundreds of H-1B visa holders rushing to leave the US ahead of the September 21 deadline, worried that they may be barred from re-entry once the new regulations take effect.

### Indian Government’s Response

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is actively assessing the full implications of the US’s decision to raise H-1B visa fees. The MEA has acknowledged media reports about the proposed restrictions and stated that Indian industry and government stakeholders are studying their potential impact.

Additionally, the MEA noted that an initial analysis from industry representatives clarifying some misconceptions related to the H-1B program has already been made public.
