West Hollywood Carnaval brings thousands into the streets on Halloween night
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — Thousands of Halloween revelers took to the streets on Friday night for the annual West Hollywood Carnaval.
The beloved celebration officially got underway at 6 p.m. and was scheduled to continue until 11 p.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard, between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard. The street festival is touted by the city as transforming Santa Monica Boulevard into “a mile-long celebration of costumes, creativity, music, and community.”
The event featured a live DJ, food trucks, and live entertainment, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd.
“We’ve been months and months and months planning for this event,” said Sgt. Jason Duron of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “We’re increasing our patrols, we have hundreds of deputies on foot out here at the festival, keeping roads blocked, keeping people safe.”
Duron added, “There are going to be deputies in uniform and deputies out of uniform. You’re not going to see them. We do have undercover people here.”
West Hollywood officials advised attendees that bringing pets and children to the often-crowded event was not recommended due to safety concerns.
This year’s Carnaval coincided with Game 6 of the World Series. As the Dodgers faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays, local bars and restaurants hosted packed watch parties.
“Bracing for impact right now,” said Jonathan Cottrell, owner of GYM Bar WeHo, before the game. “We knew this was a possibility but kind of hoped the Dodgers would’ve clinched it by now. Today’s an elimination game, so our theme tonight is, ‘We’re not dead yet.’”
