Instacart, DoorDash among companies offering discounts to SNAP recipients
Instacart announced on Friday that it will offer customers who receive SNAP benefits a 50% discount on their next grocery order. This move aims to ease the financial strain as the government prepares to cut off food aid payments.
Any customer who placed an order in October using a SNAP/EBT card will be eligible for this discount. The offer will remain available even if the government proceeds with the planned payments on November 1.
In addition to the discount, Instacart will triple its usual donations to more than 300 food banks nationwide. The San Francisco-based grocery delivery company stated that both initiatives amount to $5 million in direct relief.
“As SNAP funding faces unprecedented disruption and food banks brace for longer lines, we’re focused on practical, immediate solutions: helping families who use SNAP stretch their grocery dollars and helping food banks stock up to support their communities,” said Dani Dudeck, Instacart’s chief corporate affairs officer.
Instacart is among several major companies responding to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s plan to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on November 1 due to the government shutdown.
Similarly, DoorDash, another San Francisco-based delivery company, announced earlier this week that it would waive service and delivery fees for an estimated 300,000 orders by SNAP recipients throughout November. DoorDash also committed to delivering 1 million meals from food banks for free.
According to DoorDash, more than 2.4 million customers have a SNAP/EBT card linked to their account. Instacart has not disclosed how many of its customers receive SNAP benefits but began accepting online SNAP payments in 2020. The company offers discounted memberships for SNAP recipients and waives delivery fees on orders over $35.
