Nomad’s land
Call them wandering mystics, if you will. But in vernacular, they are defined by one mighty compelling word: malang.
The malangs don’t have a place they’d call home. As such, they are almost nomadic, often camping in small groups next to shrines. They may associate themselves with the Sufis and shrines they are visiting, forming a unique bond with these spiritual centers.
They also participate in festivals, known as Urs, and may perform dhamal, a devotional dance that expresses their spirituality and devotion. Since they don’t seek material gains and have no steady source of income, they receive their daily meals at the langars held at the shrines.
This lifestyle reflects their deep commitment to a life of devotion and detachment from worldly possessions.
