Brown’s 41 points not enough for Celtics in loss to Pistons
DETROIT — Cade Cunningham scored 25 points and Jalen Duren added 24 to help the Detroit Pistons hold off the Boston Celtics for a 119-113 victory on Sunday.
The Celtics jumped out to a strong start, leading 14-2 early and building a lead as large as 17 points. Jaylen Brown led Boston with 41 points, keeping the team competitive throughout the game.
Detroit, however, relied on its second-chance opportunities, scoring 30 points off offensive rebounds — including four crucial points by Ausar Thompson in the final minutes. Thompson finished the game with 21 points, while Duren also pulled down 17 rebounds. Cade Cunningham contributed eight assists to round out a well-balanced performance.
Although the Celtics did not allow Detroit to score 42 points in a quarter as they had in each of their first two losses this season, Detroit managed to put up a combined 70 points over the second and third periods, taking a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Boston fought back in the final minutes, cutting the deficit to four points with 1:13 remaining when Jaylen Brown made two free throws. However, Tobias Harris responded immediately by scoring off an offensive rebound on the next possession, helping to seal the win for Detroit. Harris finished with 18 points, marking him as the Pistons’ fourth player to reach double figures in scoring.
For the Celtics, Payton Pritchard scored 21 points, Derrick White had 15, and reserve Anfernee Simons added 12. Boston continues to navigate early-season challenges without injured star Jayson Tatum and departed contributors Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford, resulting in an 0-3 start.
Detroit improved to 2-1 with the win, following an opening loss at Chicago. Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff addressed the importance of transparency and caution among NBA players and coaches regarding conversations with outsiders that might have gambling implications, a topic that remains in the spotlight especially in Detroit. The city holds a special place in NBA history, as Chauncey Billups helped the Pistons claim the 2004 NBA championship and enjoyed the most celebrated period of his Hall of Fame career there.
