AIIMS Bhopal Performs Sinus Venosus ASD Closure With Hybrid Stent
**AIIMS Bhopal Performs First Sinus Venosus Atrial Septal Defect Closure Using Hybrid Covered Stent**
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed its first sinus venosus atrial septal defect (ASD) closure using a hybrid covered stent. The innovative balloon-based flaring technique was applied at the right atrium–superior vena cava (RA–SVC) junction, achieving complete diversion of the right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV) flow unobstructed to the left atrium.
The procedure required special care due to the presence of an accessory RUPV, which needed protection to prevent obstruction. Additionally, the caudal superior vena cava–right atrium (SVC–RA) junction was notably wide, necessitating deliberate stent flaring to ensure proper sealing and optimal blood flow.
The team utilized a unique hybrid covered stent featuring a 15 mm uncovered portion at one end. To safeguard the accessory vein, a 5F JR catheter was carefully passed through the stent struts at the junction of the covered and uncovered portions. Furthermore, the challenge of caudal edge flaring was innovatively managed with a 28 mm BMV balloon, ensuring excellent stent apposition and elimination of any residual shunt.
