Oilers’ lose Kasperi Kapanen for several weeks to injury
The Edmonton Oilers have dropped to a 2-3-1 record on the season following a 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. After suffering three consecutive defeats, the team appears to be in a slight free-fall.
The Oilers will continue their road trip on Tuesday night, but they will be without forward Kasperi Kapanen. Head coach Kris Knoblach provided an update ahead of their game against the Ottawa Senators, saying, “Right now, it’s looking [like] up to six [weeks]. He’ll be unavailable for a while.”
Kapanen had been playing on the Oilers’ second line and contributing solidly, recording two assists so far this season. With his absence, the second line is expected to feature Andrew Mangiapane, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Jack Roslovic.
Kapanen suffered a knee injury in the loss to the Red Wings after missing a hit and colliding with the boards.
Injuries have been a significant challenge for Edmonton early in the season. Zach Hyman remains out of the lineup with a wrist injury and is expected to be sidelined until November. Mattias Janmark, who was injured during training camp, is currently on injured reserve (IR) but is expected to return soon. Additionally, Alex Regula has recently been placed on IR due to an undisclosed injury; he had offseason knee surgery related to an injury that cost him time last year.
There is some positive news for the Oilers as defenseman Jake Walman is expected to return to the lineup against the Senators. Walman has yet to play this season due to an undisclosed injury. He was acquired last season from the San Jose Sharks and appeared in 15 regular-season games with Edmonton.
The Oilers will face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday before returning home to host the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
