The Rock’s return won’t matter anymore, according to ex-WWE writer: “I’m telling you, that ship has sailed” (Exclusive)
Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently spoke about the possibility of The Rock making a return to the company. Known as The Final Boss, The Rock is currently a member of the Board of Directors at TKO.
Rocky made a few appearances at the start of 2025 during the lead-up to WrestleMania season. His last WWE appearance was at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event, where he played a key role in orchestrating John Cena’s heel turn. Since then, The Final Boss has stepped away from WWE and has not appeared on any TV tapings.
During a recent episode of *Legion of RAW*, Russo addressed fan speculation about a potential final storyline involving The Rock. According to the veteran writer, it’s too late for such a comeback. Russo expressed that casual fans have largely lost interest, a sentiment reflected by the steady drop in weekly viewership numbers.
He also noted that The Rock’s recent involvement in politics and other ventures, including his appearances with Oprah, has generated negative media coverage. This, Russo believes, has further diminished public enthusiasm for The Rock’s wrestling projects.
Russo shared his thoughts, saying:
> “I just have to tell you because I just keep seeing a lot of this. I gotta tell you guys, honestly, if that ever happened, by the time you got there, I don’t think people are gonna care anymore, bro. I really don’t. You guys see the weekly numbers. It’s about to go under a million. They’re always gonna have that million. But the longer this goes on, I don’t think people are going to care. You gotta understand too, The Rock with politics and Oprah, and all that stuff got a lot of bad press. Rock turned a lot of people off, guys. So many people put so much stock on Rock. I’m telling you, that ship has sailed, man.”

John Cena and The Rock share a storied history, having headlined back-to-back WrestleManias in 2012 and 2013. Whether they will cross paths in the ring once more remains to be seen, but fans will undoubtedly be watching closely.
