KJP Wants You To Believe Biden ‘Was Always Engaged’ As President
Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King on Monday that former President Joe Biden “was always engaged” during his time in office.
Biden’s health issues and cognitive decline during his term have been detailed in books released since the 2024 presidential election. One such book, *Original Sin*, by CNN host Jake Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson, reported that Biden once failed to recognize Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney, a long-time supporter.
King questioned Jean-Pierre, who appeared on the show to promote her book, about her repeated denials regarding Biden’s decline while she served as White House press secretary.
“We were on Air Force One going to the debate. You’ve got to remember, campaign people were on the team, his family was on the team. I actually was one of those rare trips where I didn’t see him until after the debate, even though I was on the plane,” Jean-Pierre said. “So, really, I want everybody to know that I take this question incredibly seriously, I do.”
Jean-Pierre added, “I was his White House press secretary, which means I had a role that saw him practically every day and traveled with him for more than 95 percent of the time. We’ve always said we are not going to say, ‘Oh, he didn’t age.’ He aged and he poked fun at it. We always owned up that with age comes what happens when you get older.”
King interjected, “And you saw nothing?”
Jean-Pierre responded, “What I, what I— but when we talk about the mental acuity, again, I take this very, very seriously. I never saw anyone who wasn’t there. I saw someone who was always engaged.”
“I saw someone who understood policy, pushed us on the policy, and also understood history,” she continued. “There were times—I’ll tell you this story—there were times he would call me into the Oval Office and I would be like, ‘Oh, no, oh, no,’ because I knew whatever he was going to ask me was going to be direct, was going to be about a story he read or about how we’re pushing back, how we’re pushing a message forward.”
The Wall Street Journal published several articles about President Biden’s declining mental acuity prior to his July 21, 2024, announcement that he would not seek reelection. Despite multiple sources confirming the reports, these articles faced pushback from other media outlets and Democrats.
On December 19, 2024, The Wall Street Journal revealed that White House aides had “insulated” Biden, even from his Cabinet members, as his health and mental capacity continued to deteriorate.
In May, Biden announced he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to the bone. According to the Mayo Clinic, prostate cancer that has spread to the bone is usually considered Stage 4B cancer with a five-year survival rate of 37%.
Questions about Biden’s age and health arose during his administration and the 2020 campaign. On multiple occasions, Biden made statements suggesting conversations with people who had died, including former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who passed away in 2017, and former French President François Mitterrand, who died in 1996.
In September 2022, Biden mistakenly asked for former Republican Representative Jackie Walorski of Indiana at a conference on hunger. Walorski and two staffers had been killed in a car accident several weeks earlier.
Biden also suffered multiple falls during his term in office, including one at the Air Force Academy in June 2023, a fall while on his bike in June 2022, and tripping on the steps of Air Force One on multiple occasions. He took a different set of stairs onto the VC-25, a modified Boeing 747 used as Air Force One, among other concessions attributed to his age.
