After criticism from Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp, Liverpool star Milos Kerkez sends message to fans
Liverpool Defender Milos Kerkez Sends Strong Message Following Criticism After Manchester United Defeat
Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez has issued a strong message to fans in the wake of criticism over his performance during the Reds’ 2-1 loss to Manchester United. The Hungary international was sharply criticized by pundits, with Gary Neville branding him a “10-year-old left-back” and former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp describing Kerkez as a “nervous wreck” at Anfield on Sunday.
In response to the backlash, the 21-year-old took to social media to address supporters. Posting on Instagram, Kerkez wrote: “We stay together and come back.”
Kerkez joined Liverpool from Bournemouth this summer in a £40 million deal and was nominated by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) for the Premier League Team of the Year for 2025. However, since his arrival at Anfield, the left-back has struggled to replicate the strong performances he displayed last season.
Having replaced Andy Robertson as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back, Kerkez will be eager to regain his best form as soon as possible. The young defender is currently under a long-term contract with the Reds, which runs until the summer of 2030.
Craig Burley Criticizes Leadership Over Kerkez’s Struggles
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley weighed in on the criticism surrounding Kerkez, accusing Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk of blaming the young defender rather than offering support during his difficult encounter against Manchester United.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Burley acknowledged that Kerkez has not performed at his best but argued that Van Dijk’s behavior has not helped the situation. He pointed out an incident where Van Dijk made a negative gesture towards Kerkez following a clearance that came off the defender’s head, suggesting it was an unhelpful display of leadership.
Burley commented, “It starts with leadership. Leadership is your star players and they are Mo Salah, who has not taken the bull by the horns, and Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk at the moment is not leading but blaming. Kerkez is having a bad time, there’s no doubt about it. He’s getting swallowed up by the pressure of going in with these big players in this huge football club with these big expectations.
“But I don’t think it helps when your captain is looking at him every two minutes and blaming him or digging him out. Even at the end, the clearance that comes off Kerkez’s face, what is he supposed to do? He’s tucking in behind Van Dijk, who turns around and gestures to him and the crowd sees it. I just don’t think that helps the situation [that Kerkez finds himself in].”
Looking Ahead: Champions League Clash Against Eintracht Frankfurt
Liverpool will be desperate to bounce back from their recent setback when they face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Reds will be keen to secure a win and restore confidence within the squad ahead of the demanding fixtures to come.
