Powerful Anglican Faction Rejects Next Archbishop of Canterbury
Dame Sarah Mullally’s leadership as the next Archbishop of Canterbury has been rejected by a powerful conservative faction of Anglican churches, raising the risk of a global schism.
In what has been described as a “power play” for leadership of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Rwanda has called on conservative Anglican churches to sever their ties with the Church of England.
He urged them to reject the Archbishop of Canterbury as their spiritual leader and to refuse to attend meetings called by her.
This move highlights growing tensions within the Anglican Communion and poses significant challenges for Dame Sarah Mullally’s tenure.
