Former Mariners Catcher Jesus Montero Dead at 35
**Former MLB Player Jesús Montero Passes Away at 35**
Jesús Montero, a former Major League Baseball player known for his time with the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees, has died, according to a tribute post from the Yankees.
The team shared a photo of Montero on X Sunday morning, writing, “The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero. We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones.”
Earlier this month, The Seattle Times—citing Venezuelan outlets—reported that Montero was involved in a motorcycle accident in his home country. He was struck by a pickup truck while driving in Valencia and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Newsweek later reported that he was intubated during his hospital stay.
Montero’s professional baseball career began when the Yankees signed him out of Venezuela in 2006 at just 17 years old. He made his Major League debut with New York in 2011. After appearing in 18 games for the Yankees that year, Montero was traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of a deal involving pitcher Michael Pineda.
He spent parts of the next four seasons playing in the Pacific Northwest, appearing in 208 games for the Mariners. One memorable moment from his career occurred in 2014 while playing for the Single-A Everett AquaSox; Montero got into an altercation after receiving an ice cream sandwich from a coach. He reportedly went into the stands with a bat to confront the coach and threw the sandwich at him.
Montero’s last professional play appears to have been for the Águilas del Zulia, a Venezuelan baseball team, during the 2020-2021 season.
Jesús Montero was 35 years old. The baseball community mourns the loss of a talented player whose journey began in Venezuela and reached the Major Leagues.
