Radio Astronomy in the Palm of Your Hand
When you think of a radio telescope, you usually imagine a giant dish antenna pointed skyward. However, [vhuvanmakes] has built something quite different: the Wavy-Scope, a handheld radio telescope capable of detecting the Sun, the Moon, and more.
The build is relatively straightforward, utilizing a commercial LNB (Low Noise Block downconverter) to pick up signals in the 10-12 GHz range. The detector itself is a simple satellite finder, though for those wanting a more advanced setup, it can also be connected to a software-defined radio.
The unit features a sci-fi style design and is 3D printed, evoking the look of a classic 1950s-era ray gun. Several videos showcase the Wavy-Scope in action, including one where it successfully detects the Sun. Another video even demonstrates the instrument picking up otherwise invisible satellites.
Of course, the Wavy-Scope will detect anything that emits sufficient RF energy within the LNA’s sensitivity range. When not busy snooping on the skies, it certainly makes for a fantastic addition to a Halloween costume.
