**OpenAI Announces Special ChatGPT for Teenagers Ahead of Senate Hearing on AI Chatbot Harm**
What on earth could Sam Altman possibly be thinking? That’s a good question, right up there with: “How will he ensure that children are prevented from accessing this feature?” — the short answer being, he can’t. Then there’s the suspicion: “Is he trying to distract from the scandal this summer where ChatGPT allegedly helped a teenager kill himself?” — and unfortunately, that seems likely.
This announcement also comes just months after Meta AI was exposed for having no guardrails against engaging in sensual conversations with minors. As AI technology explodes in popularity, it appears developers are attempting to mimic even the world’s oldest profession.
Putting aside the alarming question of how this feature could affect any children with internet access, the introduction of “sexy AI” is poised to influence relationships in ways we may not yet fully anticipate.
Several recent articles have explored these emerging dynamics. The Cut asked, “Is It Cheating If It’s AI?” while Cosmopolitan questioned, “Is Your Partner Cheating on You With an AI Sidepiece?” Vice, in an article titled “People Are Cheating on Their Partners—With AI,” offered a rather depressing observation: “We’re past the point of asking whether AI belongs in relationships. It’s already in them.”
The internet has always offered new forms of pornography, from platforms like OnlyFans to the lewd imaginations powered by AI chatbots. Yet, according to a study from DatingAdvice.com and the Kinsey Institute, a majority of singles believe that engaging in sexual or romantic relationships with AI constitutes cheating.
This development is far from a harmless outlet that might keep people from “real” cheating. Psychologist Justin Lehmiller told Cosmopolitan, “The available research shows that most people who use AI for romantic or sexual reasons are not seeing AI as a replacement for human relationships. This means that people who are willing to cheat on their partners are likely to continue doing so with other humans, even when AI partners are available.”
