**Why Qualcomm is Facing an Antitrust Probe in China**

**What’s the Story?**
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has launched an antitrust investigation into US-based semiconductor giant Qualcomm. This probe follows Qualcomm’s admission that it failed to notify Chinese authorities about its acquisition of Israeli connected-vehicle technology provider Autotalks, which was completed in June 2025. The deal required approval from SAMR, but Qualcomm did not seek this prior authorization.
**Regulatory Oversight: SAMR’s Warning to Qualcomm**
In March 2024, SAMR informed Qualcomm that its acquisition of Autotalks needed regulatory approval. Later that month, Qualcomm responded, stating it would not take further action regarding the notification. Despite this, Qualcomm proceeded with the acquisition in June 2025 without informing Chinese authorities.
This lack of compliance prompted SAMR to initiate an antitrust investigation against Qualcomm for potential violations of China’s anti-monopoly laws connected to the transaction.
**Qualcomm’s Market Position in China**
Qualcomm plays a significant role in China’s semiconductor market, supplying chips to major smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. The company’s market capitalization currently stands at $165.72 billion.
Despite the ongoing antitrust probe and a recent decline in its share price, Qualcomm remains a dominant player in the global semiconductor industry. It boasts a diverse client base across various sectors, maintaining its influence and footprint worldwide.
